ShoutCast compatible streaming media server

Icecast is a streaming media server which currently supports Ogg Vorbis and MP3 audio streams. It can be used to create an Internet radio station or a privately running jukebox and many things in between. It is very versatile in that new formats can be added relatively easily and supports open standards for commuincation and interaction.

MuSE mixes, encodes, and streams sound.

MuSE is an application for the mixing, encoding, and network streaming of sound. MuSE can simultaniously mix up to 6 encoded audio bitstreams (from files or network) plus a souncard input signal. The resulting stream can be played locally on the sound card and/or encoded as an mp3 bitstream sent to a broadcast server. MuSE offers two intuitive interfaces (graphical and console) to be operated realtime and can also run in commandline mode. MuSE is being developed in the hope to provide the Free Software community with a user friendly tool for network audio streaming, making life easier for independent free speech radios.

The X MultiMedia System, a media player

XMMS is a multimedia (Ogg Vorbis, CDs) player for the X Window System with an interface similar to Winamps. XMMS supports playlists and streaming content and has a configurable interface.

MPlayer, the Movie Player for Linux

MPlayer is a multimedia player. It plays most video formats as well as DVDs. Its big feature is the wide range of supported output drivers. There are also nice antialiased shaded subtitles and OSD.

Free multimedia player

Xine is a free multimedia player. It plays back CDs, DVDs, and VCDs. It also decodes multimedia files like AVI, MOV, WMV, and MP3 from local disk drives, and displays multimedia streamed over the Internet. It interprets many of the most common multimedia formats available - and some of the most uncommon formats, too. This package contains the GUI of the Xine multimedia player. Stream directory browser

Streamtuner is a stream directory browser. Through the use of a plugin system, it offers an intuitive GTK+ 2.0 interface to Internet radio directories such as SHOUTcast and Live365.

MPEG audio player

mpg321 is a Free replacement for mpg123, a very popular command-line mp3 player. mpg123 is used for frontends, as an mp3 player and as an mp3 to wave file decoder (primarily for use with CD-recording software.) In all of these capacities, mpg321 can be used as a drop-in replacement for mpg123.

GStreamer streaming media framework runtime

GStreamer is a streaming media framework, based on graphs of filters which operate on media data. Applications using this library can do anything from real-time sound processing to playing videos, and just about anything else media-related. Its plugin-based architecture means that new data types or processing capabilities can be added simply by installing new plugins.
