Audio Editor With Effects/Analysis Tools

Audacity is a program that lets you manipulate digital audio waveforms. In addition to letting you record sounds directly from within the program, it imports many sound file formats, including WAV, AIFF, MP3 and Ogg/Vorbis. It supports all common editing operations such as Cut, Copy, and Paste, plus it will mix tracks and let you apply plug-in effects to any part of a sound. It also has a built-in amplitude envelope editor, a customizable spectrogram mode and a frequency analysis window for audio analysis applications.

MPlayer, the Movie Player for Linux.

MPlayer is a movie player. It plays most video formats as well as DVDs. Its big feature is the wide range of supported output drivers. There are also nice antialiased shaded subtitles and OSD.

A front-end for CD rippers and Ogg Vorbis encoders.

Grip is a GTK+ based front-end for CD rippers (such as cdparanoia and cdda2wav) and Ogg Vorbis encoders. Grip allows you to rip entire tracks or just a section of a track. Grip supports the CDDB protocol for accessing track information on disc database servers.

MuSE mixes, encodes, and streams sound.

MuSE is an application for the mixing, encoding, and network streaming of sound. MuSE can simultaniously mix up to 6 encoded audio bitstreams (from files or network) plus a souncard input signal. The resulting stream can be played locally on the sound card and/or encoded as an mp3 bitstream sent to a broadcast server. MuSE offers two intuitive interfaces (graphical and console) to be operated realtime and can also run in commandline mode. MuSE is being developed in the hope to provide the Free Software community with a user friendly tool for network audio streaming, making life easier for independent free speech radios.

iPod Manager

gtkpod is a platform independent GUI for Apple's iPod using GTK2. It allows you to upload songs and playlists to your iPod. It supports ID3 tag editing, multiple charsets for ID3 tags, detects duplicate songs, allows offline modification of the database with later synchronisation, and more.

Sound wave editor

Sweep is an editor for sound samples. It operates on files of various formats such as .wav, .aiff and .au, and has multiple undo/redo levels and filters. It supports audio filter plugins from the LADSPA project.

VideoCD (pre-)mastering and ripping tool.

VCDImager allows you to create VideoCD BIN/CUE CD images from mpeg files which can be burned with cdrdao or any other program capable of burning BIN/CUE files. VCDRip, which comes with VCDImager, does the reverse operation. That is, ripping mpeg streams from images (and already burned VideoCDs) and showing some information about the VideoCD.

The VideoLAN client, also a very good standalone DVD player.

The vlc is part of the VideoLAN project, a full MPEG2 client/server solution. The VideoLAN Client can also be used as a standalone program to play MPEG2 streams from a hard disk or a DVD.

DVD ripping graphical tool using transcode.

dvd::rip is a Perl Gtk+ based DVD copy program built on top of a low level DVD Ripping API, which uses the Linux Video Stream Processing Tool transcode.

MP3 streams recorder

streamripper records shoutcast compatible and live365 streams. For shoutcast style streams it finds the "meta data" or track separation data, and uses that as a marker for where the track should be separated. For live365 streams it hits the website and finds when a track has changed. Either way, the MP3 data will be decoded and scanned for a silent point which is where tracks will be created.

A free multimedia player.

Xine is a free multimedia player. It plays back CDs, DVDs, and VCDs. It also decodes multimedia files like AVI, MOV, WMV, and MP3 from local disk drives, and displays multimedia streamed over the Internet. It interprets many of the most common multimedia formats available - and some of the most uncommon formats, too. This package contains the GUI of the Xine multimedia player. FreeJ is a digital instrument for video livesets, featuring realtime rendering of multilayered video and chained effect filtering directly on the screen. NOTE: This package is hard-coded to require an MMX capable processor.

A powerful CD creation and audio maniplation program

The primary goal of SimpleCDR-X is to be a powerful CD creation and audio maniplation program. Ease of use, flexibilty, and a clean interface of of utmost importance. SimpleCDR-X achieves this by not having the option to enable every single mkisofs and cdrecord option. Instead a small selection of commonly used options are available. In no way does this compromise the power of SimpleCDR-X because a majority of the options you will never use or know about unless you have the man page printed out for quick reference.

A Linux video stream processing utility.

Transcode is a linux text-console utility for video stream processing. Decoding and encoding is done by loading modules that are responsible for feeding transcode with raw video/audio streams (import modules) and encoding the frames (export modules). It supports elementary video and audio frame transformations, including de-interlacing or fast resizing of video frames and loading of external filters. Please see the included README file for more.
