The openhatch website http://openhatch.org/ has a list of ways to help free software projects out and it also lets free software project maintainers/creators to attract more attention to their projects and to attract some contributors.

It has training missions so you can learn how to use tar, diff, patch, Subversion, and Git.

It has a search engine for finding volunteering opportunities
